Howard L. Bachrach was an American biochemist whose team at the USDA's Plum Island Animal Disease Center produced in 1981 the first genetically engineered vaccine, against foot-and-mouth disease, and whose earlier purification of the poliovirus aided Jonas Salk's polio vaccine. For this pioneering work he received the National Medal of Science in 1983. Born into a Jewish family in Faribault, Minnesota, his documented Jewish background is noted in Jewish biographical references.
