Ross was a physical chemist at MIT and then Stanford whose work spanned chemical kinetics, molecular-beam scattering, nonequilibrium thermodynamics and nonlinear chemical dynamics, including the analysis of oscillating reactions and methods to deduce reaction mechanisms from data. He received the National Medal of Science in 1999. He was Jewish and had fled Austria after the Nazi annexation.
