Biography

Alexander Pines is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physical chemist known for solid-state NMR spectroscopy

How & why

Pines, who was Jewish and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before moving to the United States, helped launch modern solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. With John Waugh he introduced cross-polarization and high-resolution NMR of dilute nuclei such as carbon-13 in solids, giving chemists a way to see atomic structure in materials. He received the Wolf Prize in Chemistry.
