How & why

Jerrold J. Katz was an American philosopher and linguist who built the first comprehensive theory of semantics within generative grammar and later argued that language is an abstract object rather than a physical or mental one. He taught for decades at the City University of New York, where he was Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Linguistics. He was Jewish, and is included in reference lists of Jewish philosophers.
