How & why

Hans Reichenbach was a philosopher of science and a leader of logical empiricism who founded the Berlin school of logical positivism. His analysis of the tenses of verbs introduced the framework of speech-, event- and reference-time that still shapes the study of temporal reference in language. Of Jewish descent, he was dismissed under the Nazis in 1933, emigrated via Istanbul and settled at UCLA.
