James Ax is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Number theory and logic; the Ax-Kochen theorem
Ax was a mathematician who, with Simon Kochen, used model theory to prove the Ax–Kochen theorem on Diophantine problems over the p-adic numbers, work that won them the Cole Prize in Number Theory in 1967. He later co-founded, with James Simons, the quantitative-finance firm that became Renaissance Technologies' Medallion Fund. Born in New York City, he is listed among Jewish mathematicians in Jewish biographical references (Jinfo).
