Izhar Cohen, born in Tel Aviv in 1951 and raised in Givatayim, comes from a family of singers of Yemenite-Jewish descent. He performed in the IDF's Nahal troupe from the age of eighteen and was one of the most played singers in Israel in the 1970s. At the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest he won for Israel with the group Alphabeta and the song 'A-Ba-Ni-Bi', music by Nurit Hirsh and lyrics by Ehud Manor; the title comes from a Hebrew children's language game applied to the word 'I'.
It was Israel's first Eurovision victory, and the country won again the following year. He has also acted with the Haifa Theatre.
