Gali Atari, born Avigail Atari in Rehovot in 1953 to Jewish immigrants from Yemen, grew up in a Yemenite-Jewish household; her father died when she was four and the family moved to Tel Aviv. Her sisters Yona and Shosh also became public figures. In 1979 she was the lead voice of the group Milk and Honey, which won the Eurovision Song Contest held in Jerusalem on 31 March with 'Hallelujah', giving Israel a second victory in a row and a hit across the European charts.
She went on to a solo career of several decades and worked as an actress in film and television. One of her songs was voted the country's best ever in 2023.
