Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog was a distinguished rabbinic scholar who served as the first Chief Rabbi of the Irish Free State and later as Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Mandatory Palestine and then Israel, working to rescue Jews and Jewish children during and after the Holocaust. A master of Jewish law, he wrote on halakhah in the modern state. He was an Orthodox Jew and patriarch of the Herzog family; his son Chaim became President of Israel.
