Origins and early life
Chaim Herzog was born on 17 September 1918 in Belfast, son of Yitzhak Halevi Herzog, Chief Rabbi of Ireland and later Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, and of Sarah Hillman, daughter of the Talmudic scholar Shmuel Yitzchak Hillman. Raised in Dublin in an observant rabbinical home, he emigrated to Palestine in 1935 and joined the Haganah the following year. He read law in Britain, served as a British Army intelligence officer in the Second World War — present at the liberation of the camps in northern Germany — and fought in Israel's War of Independence.
Work and career
He twice headed the IDF's Military Intelligence, from 1948 to 1950 and again from 1959 to 1962, retiring a major-general. As Israel's ambassador to the United Nations from 1975 to 1978, he tore up Resolution 3379, which called Zionism racism, on the rostrum of the General Assembly. In 1983 he was elected sixth President of Israel and served two terms until 1993; he died in Tel Aviv on 17 April 1997, and his son Isaac Herzog would later take the same oath.
