Isaac Boleslavsky is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — Chess grandmaster and opening theorist
Boleslavsky was among the first players awarded the FIDE Grandmaster title in 1950 and came within a playoff of a World Championship match in 1951. A leading opening theorist, he gave his name to the Boleslavsky Variation of the Sicilian Defence and served as chief trainer of the Soviet Chess Federation. He was born to a Jewish family in Zolotonosha, Ukraine.
