Richard Réti is recognized among Jewish contributors to Sports — Chess grandmaster and hypermodern theorist
How & why
Réti was a leading chess grandmaster and a founder of the hypermodern school, showing that the centre could be controlled from a distance rather than occupied by pawns; the Réti Opening bears his name. He was also a celebrated composer of endgame studies and a blindfold-play record holder. He was born into a Jewish family in what is now Slovakia.
