How & why

Oppenheim was MIT's first theoretical chemist and a pioneer of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and kinetic theory, whose work deepened the microscopic foundations of thermodynamics and irreversible processes. He served for years as a senior editor of Physical Review E. He came from an American Jewish family (his parents were James and Rose Rosenberg Oppenheim).
