Irving Kaplansky is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Algebra; ring theory and Kaplansky's conjectures
Kaplansky, born in Toronto to Polish-Jewish immigrants, was one of the twentieth century's most versatile algebraists, making lasting contributions to ring theory, field theory, group theory and operator algebras. He taught for decades at the University of Chicago and later directed the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. His famous conjectures still guide research in algebra.
