Irving 'Al' Gross was a pioneer of mobile wireless communication who invented an early walkie-talkie in 1938 and later pioneered the telephone pager and Citizens' Band (CB) radio, anticipating personal wireless devices by decades. His patents expired before the technologies reached mass markets, but he was honored with the Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award. He was the son of Romanian-Jewish immigrants.
