Inbal Rabin-Lieberman, born in 1998 at kibbutz Nir Am near the Gaza border, was appointed the kibbutz's civilian security coordinator in December 2022 — the first woman there to hold the post. Woken early on 7 October 2023 by the sound of drones and unusual movement at the border, she opened the community armoury on her own judgement, armed the twelve members of the standby squad and positioned them in ambush along the perimeter fence. Together with her uncle, a squad member, the team held off the attackers for about three hours until army reinforcements arrived. Nir Am was one of only two communities entered that day in which no resident was killed; in 2024 she was chosen to light a torch at Israel's Independence Day ceremony.
