Immanuel Frances is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — Italian Hebrew poet and rabbinical scholar, an outspoken opponent of Sabbateanism.
Immanuel Frances was an Italian Hebrew poet and rabbinical scholar who, with his brother Jacob, waged a poetic and polemical campaign (1664–1667) against the messianic movement of Sabbatai Zevi and against what he saw as the excesses of Kabbalah. A committed Jewish scholar, he wrote 'Metek Sefatayim', a treatise on Hebrew prosody illustrated with his own verse. Opposition from Kabbalist rabbis forced him to wander and settle finally in Livorno.
