How & why
Kipnis was an American harpsichordist and fortepianist, one of the most celebrated of his generation, who helped revive interest in Baroque keyboard music through recordings, concerts and teaching. He was the son of the great Ukrainian-Jewish operatic bass Alexander Kipnis and grandson of pianist Heniot Levy. He was born into this Jewish musical family in Berlin before it emigrated to the United States.
