Igal Talmi is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist; the nuclear shell model
Igal Talmi was an Israeli nuclear physicist and a founder of the modern nuclear shell model, developing calculational methods that made the model's predictions tractable and shaped how physicists understand nuclear structure. Born in Kiev to a Jewish family that immigrated to Mandate Palestine the same year, he earned his doctorate under Wolfgang Pauli in Zurich and co-founded the nuclear physics department at the Weizmann Institute. He died in 2026 just after his 101st birthday.
