Hillel the Elder was one of the most important Jewish sages of the Second Temple period and a founder of the rabbinic tradition, presiding over the school known as the House of Hillel. Asked to summarize the Torah, he famously replied, 'What is hateful to you, do not do to another; that is the whole Torah.'
