Herman Kalckar was a Danish-American biochemist whose studies of aerobic phosphorylation established that ATP synthesis is coupled to cellular respiration, and whose later work illuminated nucleotide sugar metabolism and the enzyme defects behind galactosemia. Working at Copenhagen and later Harvard and the NIH, he helped found modern bioenergetics. He was born into a Danish Jewish family.
