Henri Baruk is recognized among Jewish contributors to Philosophy & Social Sciences — French psychiatrist and pioneer of moral psychiatry
Baruk was a French psychiatrist and neuropsychiatrist who championed a humane, ethically grounded 'moral psychiatry' and studied experimental catatonia. From a French Jewish family of psychiatrists (his father Jacques Baruk directed an asylum), he drew explicitly on Hebrew ethical tradition, promoting the biblical concept of tsedek (justice) as a foundation for treating the mentally ill with dignity. He headed the Charenton asylum and wrote prolifically on psychiatry and Jewish thought.
