Tramer was a pioneer of child and adolescent psychiatry who helped define the field, founding in 1934 what became the first dedicated journal of child psychiatry and writing an influential textbook on the subject. Born the son of a poor Jewish family in Galicia, he trained first in mathematics and engineering before turning to medicine and settling in Switzerland. His systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment of childhood disorders shaped the discipline internationally.
