Eugene Minkowski

Eugène Minkowski was a French psychiatrist who, with Ludwig Binswanger, founded phenomenological psychopathology, applying the philosophies of Bergson and Husserl to mental illness and introducing the ideas of 'lived time' and a loss of 'vital contact with reality' in schizophrenia. Born into a wealthy Polish-Jewish family in Saint Petersburg, he trained in Germany and Switzerland and settled in Paris. He was actively Jewish and led relief work for Jewish children during and after the Holocaust.
