Helena Kagan was born in Tashkent to Moshe and Miriam Kagan, a Jewish couple from Riga, and took her medical degree in Bern because Russian universities barred Jewish women. She reached Jerusalem in 1914 and was refused a licence by the Ottoman authorities because she was a woman; she practised anyway. She opened the first children's clinic in the city, founded the paediatric department of Bikur Cholim and later Hadassah's, treated Jewish, Muslim and Christian children without distinction through war and siege, and received the Israel Prize in 1975.
