Volynov is a Soviet cosmonaut who flew Soyuz 5 (1969) and Soyuz 21 (1976), and is generally recognized as the first person of Jewish descent to reach space. His mother was Jewish; despite facing antisemitic barriers within the space program, he became the last surviving member of the original 1960 cosmonaut group.
