How & why

Zohn was an Austrian-American scholar and translator, a professor of German at Brandeis University, who did much to bring German-Jewish literature and thought to English-speaking readers, including celebrated translations of Walter Benjamin, Karl Kraus and Theodor Herzl. He was a leading authority on Austrian-Jewish culture and Zionism. Born into a Jewish family in Vienna, he fled Nazi Austria in 1939.
