How & why

Alfred Kerr was a German theatre critic so influential he was nicknamed the 'Kulturpapst' (pope of culture), pioneering a personal, essayistic style of criticism in Berlin's press. An outspoken opponent of Nazism, he fled Germany in 1933 and his books were among those burned; he lived in exile, mainly in Britain. Kerr was Jewish.
