Theodor Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist and playwright who became the founding father of modern political Zionism after covering the Dreyfus Affair. His 1896 pamphlet Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) argued for a sovereign Jewish homeland, and in 1897 he convened the First Zionist Congress in Basel and founded the World Zionist Organization. He was Jewish, and his vision laid the ideological groundwork for the eventual establishment of the State of Israel.
