Biography

Harry Kesten is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Probability theory; percolation and random walks

How & why

Kesten was born to a Jewish family that fled Nazi Germany, and after wartime displacement he studied in the Netherlands and built his career at Cornell. He became a leading probabilist, proving that the critical probability for two-dimensional bond percolation equals exactly one-half and obtaining deep results on random walks and self-avoiding walks. His theorems are cornerstones of modern probability and statistical physics.
