Reissner was a German-born engineer, mathematician and physicist who made foundational contributions to applied mechanics, aeroelasticity and early aviation — collaborating with Hugo Junkers on the tail-first all-metal 'Ente' aircraft — and gave his name to the Reissner-Nordström solution in general relativity. A Jewish scholar, he was forced from his work under the Nazis and emigrated in 1938, teaching at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.
