Sivashinsky is a mathematician and combustion scientist whose equations for flame instabilities — including the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation and the Michelson–Sivashinsky equation — became cornerstones of the theory of turbulent flames and of nonlinear pattern formation. A student of Zel'dovich and Barenblatt, he holds a combustion chair at Tel Aviv University. A Soviet Jewish émigré, he emigrated from the USSR to Israel in 1971.
