How & why

Born to a Jewish family in Timișoara, Romania, Lusztig left the country and built his career at MIT. With David Kazhdan he introduced the Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials, and he essentially created the representation theory of reductive groups over finite fields, deep structures at the heart of algebra. He received the inaugural 2008 Shaw Prize in Mathematics. He is Jewish.
