Biography

Gábor Tardos is recognized among Jewish contributors to Technology & Engineering — Hungarian mathematician; Gödel Prize (2020) for the algorithmic Lovász Local Lemma

How & why

A Hungarian mathematician at the Rényi Institute and Central European University, and brother of the computer scientist Éva Tardos, he works in combinatorics and theoretical computer science. With Robin Moser he gave a strikingly simple, constructive proof of the general Lovász Local Lemma — turning an abstract existence result into an efficient algorithm — for which he shared the 2020 Gödel Prize. He is documented as being of Hungarian Jewish background.
