Fritz Kreisler was one of the most celebrated violin virtuosos of the early 20th century, born in Vienna to a Jewish father, the physician Samuel Kreisler, and baptised as a boy. Renowned for his sweet tone and expressive rubato, he also composed many short violin pieces, some of which he initially attributed to earlier composers. He later became an American citizen.
