Charles-Valentin Alkan is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — French Romantic composer and virtuoso pianist of formidable technical works
Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French Romantic composer and one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of his era, whose formidably difficult works (such as the Douze études dans tous les tons mineurs) were long neglected before their twentieth-century revival. He was Jewish, from an Ashkenazi family in Paris, and remained attached to Jewish culture, translating parts of the Bible and Talmud.
