How & why
Charles-Valentin Alkan was born into an Ashkenazi Jewish family in Paris (the Alkan Morhange family) and remained an observant Jew throughout his life. A virtuoso pianist and Romantic composer, he translated parts of the Hebrew Bible and Talmud and his Jewish faith shaped much of his later, reclusive life.
