How & why

Friedrich Bleich was an Austrian structural engineer, author and co-founder of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), renowned for uniting engineering practice with rigorous theory, especially in the buckling and stability of metal structures; his 'Buckling Strength of Metal Structures' became a standard reference. Forced from Austria as a Jew after the 1938 Anschluss, he found asylum in Switzerland and reached the United States in 1941. His Jewish identity and flight from Nazism are documented.
