How & why

Eirich was a physical chemist and pioneer of rheology — the science of the flow and deformation of matter — who edited its standard multi-volume treatise Rheology: Theory and Applications and received the Society of Rheology's Bingham Medal in 1983, working for decades at the Polytechnic Institute of New York. He was a Jewish refugee: barred from the University of Vienna after the 1938 Anschluss, he fled to Britain, was interned and sent to Australia, and eventually settled in the United States.
