Ferdinand Cohn was a German botanist and microbiologist regarded as one of the founders of modern bacteriology, the first to classify bacteria systematically and to recognize their nature as plants. He also championed the young Robert Koch, helping launch modern germ science. He was born to a Jewish family in the ghetto of Breslau and was one of the first Jews admitted to a German professorship in the natural sciences.
