Biography

Fanny Mendelssohn is recognized among Jewish contributors to Arts & Literature — German composer and pianist of hundreds of songs and piano works

How & why

Fanny Mendelssohn (later Hensel) was a German composer and pianist who wrote hundreds of works, chiefly songs and piano pieces, whose gifts rivaled those of her brother Felix; some of her music was long published under his name. Modern scholarship has restored her recognition as a significant Romantic composer. She was born into the prominent Jewish Mendelssohn family (granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn) and was baptized a Protestant in childhood.
