Biography

Evgeny Likhtman is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Physicist (co-originator of supersymmetry)

How & why

Likhtman, working with Yuri Golfand, constructed in 1971 the first four-dimensional supersymmetric field theory, and was the first to note that the vacuum energy vanishes in supersymmetric theories, a foundational insight of modern particle physics. Of Jewish origin, he studied in Moscow and later emigrated, his career hampered by Soviet antisemitism. Supersymmetry became a central framework in theoretical physics.
