Eugen Goldstein was a German physicist and pioneer of gas-discharge tubes who coined the term 'cathode rays' and in 1886 discovered 'canal rays' (anode rays), positively charged particle streams whose study helped open the path to identifying the proton and to mass spectrometry. He came from a Jewish family in Upper Silesia and worked chiefly at the Berlin Observatory.
