Leonid Mandelstam was a founder of the Soviet school of radiophysics and, with Grigory Landsberg, co-discovered the combinational (Raman) scattering of light in crystals in 1928, independently of Raman's work. He made deep contributions to the theory of nonlinear oscillations and to optics. He was born into a Jewish family in Mogilev.
