Biography

Esther Lederberg is recognized among Jewish contributors to Science & Medicine — Microbiologist who discovered the lambda phage and developed replica plating.

How & why

Esther Lederberg was born to a Jewish family in the Bronx and became a foundational figure in bacterial genetics. She discovered the lambda bacteriophage and the bacterial fertility factor F, and co-developed the replica plating technique that made it possible to isolate mutants and demonstrate that mutations arise independently of selection. Her contributions were long overshadowed by those of her husband and collaborators.
