Mendelsohn, an American oncologist from a Jewish family, pioneered the idea of blocking the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to stop cancer cells from dividing. His research led directly to cetuximab (Erbitux), one of the first targeted monoclonal-antibody cancer drugs, approved for colorectal and head-and-neck cancers. He later served as president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
