Ernst Adolf Spiegel was an Austrian-American neurologist who, with the surgeon Henry Wycis, co-invented human stereotactic neurosurgery, introducing in 1947 a frame-based apparatus that let surgeons reach deep brain targets with precision. The technique became the foundation of modern functional neurosurgery, including treatments for movement disorders. He was of Jewish origin and emigrated from Vienna to the United States.
