Ernst Bergmann

Ernst David Bergmann was a German-born chemist and a founding figure of Israeli science. After fleeing Nazi Germany, he worked with Chaim Weizmann and helped build the country's research base, becoming the first scientific director of the Weizmann Institute and the first chairman of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission. A prolific chemist with more than 500 papers and an Israel Prize laureate, he was Jewish and a committed Zionist.
