Chaim Weizmann was a chemist who developed the acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation process, using bacteria to produce acetone that was vital to British munitions in the First World War. A leading figure of the Zionist movement, he helped secure the Balfour Declaration and became the first President of the State of Israel in 1949. He was Jewish, and the Weizmann Institute of Science bears his name.
