Origins and early life
Emmanuel Racine was born in Moscow on 2 December 1911, son of Georges and Bassia Hirsch, Russian Jews who fled the Bolshevik regime and settled in Paris in 1926, where the family name was made French as Racine.
Work and career
In 1941 he joined the Jewish resistance movement La Main Forte, which became the Armée juive; by 1942 he was working in the Bourgogne escape network, run in liaison with French intelligence, which brought Allied airmen and hunted people out of France. At the end of July 1943 a network was thrown together in haste to move as many Jewish children as possible from the Haute-Savoie into Switzerland, and he was one of its organisers, alongside Georges Loinger and his own sisters Mila and Sacha.
Mila Racine was arrested that October leading a convoy and died at Amstetten in March 1945; he survived, and went on with the work until the liberation. He received the Croix de guerre 1939-1945, was made a chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1977 and an officer in 1995. He settled in Israel and died there in February 2005, at ninety-three.
