Elmer Rice was an American playwright who won the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Street Scene, his tenement drama of New York life, and earlier pioneered expressionist theater on Broadway with The Adding Machine (1923). A champion of free speech and civil liberties, he helped shape American social drama. Born Elmer Leopold Reizenstein in New York, he came from a Jewish family.
